The Bloomsburg University wrestling team closed out its home season with a 38-7 win over Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon at the Nelson Field House.


The Huskies scored three wins by technical fall and added two wins by fall to score the easy victory. Getting wins by technical fall were Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run) at 133; Rick Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) at 165 and Derek Coffey (Lewisburg/Lewisburg) at 184. Scoring wins by fall were Brian Shaw (Holidaysburg/Holidaysburg) at 197 and Zac Walsh (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) at heavyweight.

The Huskies improved to 9-7 with the win, 1-3 in the EWL. Bloomsburg will wrestle at Edinboro on Friday.


125-Bloomsburg’s James Bak scored three first period takedowns against the Viking’s Ronald Butler to lead 6-2 after one period. Bak turned a near takedown by Butler to a takedown of his own and increased his lead to 8-2 after two periods. Butler escaped to start the third and scored a takedown with 40 seconds left to make it 8-5. There was no further scoring and with riding time Bak won 9-5.

133-Bloomsburg’s Jason Guffey and Cleveland State’s Zech Huff had a busy first period with Guffey scoring four takedown and a late three-point near fall to give Guffey an 11-3 lead after one period. In the second Guffey scored a reversal and a takedown to lead 15-4 going to the final period. Guffey had two takedowns in the third and finished the match with a three-point near fall to earn a win by technical fall, 23-6.

141-Cleveland State’s Mike Mencini turned a near takedown by Bloomsburg’s Ian De Sol into a takedown of his own and added a three-point near fall to lead 5-0 after one period. Mencini had another three-point near fall in the second before De Sol countered with a takedown of his own to pull to within 8-3. In the third Mencini had a takedown and a three-point near fall and with riding time won by major decision 14-3.

149-Bloomsburg’s Josh Roosa and the Vikings Dan Castillo wrested at 149. Roosa led 5-0 after one period with a takedown and a three-point near fall. In the second the only scoring was an escape by Roosa. In the third Roosa scored three takedowns and with riding time won 13-3.

157-The Huskies Matt Moley took early control of his bout with Corey Carlo getting an early takedown and a three-point near fall to hold an early 5-0 lead. After Carlo escaped Moley scored another takedown for a 7-1 lead after three minutes. Moley had the only scoring of the second with a takedown and led 9-1 after t a two periods. Moley added a takedown in the third and with riding time won 12-2.

165-BU’s Rick Schmelyun led 5-0 after one period against CSU’s Rob Michaels after getting a takedown and a three-point near fall. In the second Schmelyun had a takedown and two, three-point near falls to lead 13-0. In the third Schmelyun closed out the match with a takedown and with riding time won by technical fall, 16-0.

174-Cleveland State’s Marcus Effner scored a last second takedown for the only scoring of the first period against Mike Dessino. In the second period Dessino started with an escape before Effner got a second takedown to lead 4-1 after two periods.  The third period’s only scoring was a point for Dessino on stalling for Effner with Effner going on to a 4-2 win.

184-Derek Coffey for Bloomsburg dominated from the start against Nick Anthony taking a 14-0 lead after one period and completing the win by technical fall with a takedown just 19 seconds into the second to win 17-0 with riding time.

197-Bloomsburg’s Brian Shaw took down CSU’s Jeff Schuller early in the period and quickly turned Schuller on his back and scored a win by fall in 1:09.


285-Zac Walsh from Bloomsburg scored a takedown midway through his match with the Viking’s Chris Weber and then put Weber on his back and scored a pin in just 1:52.
