22-year-old Man Hijacks Schoolbus in Arkansas
A group of Arkansas elementary school students had a rough start to their morning on Thursday when a young man wielding a knife boarded their school bus and took the wheel.
After a 20 minute and 10 mile chase, police managed to stop the bus and apprehend the suspect. None of the 11 students or the bus driver were injured.
Police arrested 22-year-old Nicholas John Miller after the incident. He faces charges of vehicle piracy, 12 counts of kidnapping – one for every person on the bus – and two counts of aggravated assault. Authorities say that Miller kidnapped the bus after he demanded a vehicle from a woman who did not have one. Miller’s motive for hijacking the school bus is that he was being chased and needed the bus to save his life.
The chase began in Jacksonville – about 12 miles outside of Little Rock – and ended in nearby Cabot, according to authorities. Police also stated that this was not Miller’s first run-in with the law. Earlier this year he was arrested on suspicion of breaking and entering a vehicle, and stealing a shotgun and money. He was placed on 24 months of probation in September.
A cell phone video of the police chase was recorded by 17-year-old Kelsey Eggers and provided to CNN. The video, available below, shows the school bus on a two lane road being pursued by 10 police cruisers.
