Terror Behind the Walls at Eastern State Penitentiary

Outside the walls of Eastern State Penitentiary

As Halloween slowly creeps up on us, many haunted house attractions are beginning to make their yearly appearance across the country. While you wouldn’t have to travel far in order to find one of these scare factories, the Program Board at Bloomsburg University is sponsoring a bus trip to one of the most infamous haunted houses on the east coast.

Beginning on Friday, Oct. 18, students will be able to sign up to visit Eastern State Penitentiary, a Philadelphia prison that was abandoned in 1971 and remains open during the month of October to provide a unique haunted house experience. What separates Eastern State Penitentiary from nearly every other haunted house attraction though, is that former inmates from the 1940’s reported paranormal phenomena and ghost sightings within the walls of the prison. There are even documented cases of notorious criminal Al Capone having these experiences during his stay.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in, students are encouraged to sign up at the Student Activities Office, 350 in the Kehr Union Building. The times available to sign up are 10am—4:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 10 a.m.—6:30pm on Wednesday. The bus trips will be on Sunday, Oct. 27. The bus will depart from the Bloomsburg University Hospital Lot at 1 p.m. and leaves the prison at 10:30 p.m. There will be time allotted to eat, shop, and explore before entering the haunted house at 8:30 p.m. The cost for a trip is $40 with a BU student ID. Cash, checks, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover), and Husky Gold are accepted. Refunds will not be offered after noon on Oct. 18 without approval from the Program Board Executive Board.

Although the bus trips are not open to the general public, this is a one-of-a-kind experience that takes you to an actual haunted house. Whether these types of attractions appeal to you or not during October, enjoy the brisk weather and have a Happy Halloween.
