State Rep. David Millard named grand marshal for homecoming parade

Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s homecoming weekend celebration will kick off Saturday, Oct. 17, with the homecoming parade and activities throughout the day.

The annual combined homecoming parade of BU and Bloomsburg High School will begin at 11 a.m. in the Bloomsburg Hospital parking lot along Lightstreet Road. The parade route will continue on College Hill to Main Street, and follow Market Street to Town Park.

This year’s parade grand marshal is state Rep. David R. Millard, a 1971 graduate of Bloomsburg Area High School, who earned a bachelor’s degree from Bloomsburg University in 1988. Millard, who represents the commonwealth’s 109th Legislative District in Columbia County, is vice chair of the House agriculture and rural affairs committee and serves on the appropriations and state government committees. Locally, he is active in the Bloomsburg Fire Department and serves as a director of the Bloomsburg Fair.

The BU Alumni Association will celebrate homecoming with an alumni tent party following the theme, “Sights and Sounds of the ’60s,” from 12:30 until 3 p.m. at the Fenstemaker Alumni House. The event will feature a performance by The Mudflaps, an oldies show and dance band.  Admission is free; food may be purchased from corporate sponsors’ booths. Attendees are asked to register in advance at www.bloomualumni.com.

The BU Huskies will face off against the Cheyney University Wolves at 3:30 p.m. in Redman Stadium. Tickets for the football game are $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. BU students with a valid ID get in free. The gates will open 90 minutes before kickoff.

Other homecoming activities include campus tours and formal and informal reunions of the classes of 1959, 1969, 1979 and all ’70s alumni, 1989 and 1999; nursing alumni and AALANA (African American, Latino, Asian American and Native American) alumni.
