Spring Awakening Preview

Broadway Musicals are a staple for performance halls the size of Mitrani.  With the large stage, 1800 seats and easy truck parking for load in and out, Celebrity Artist Series is naturally suited to fulfill the rigors of the traveling Broadway show.  Over the past 25 seasons CAS has had only one year when there was not a Broadway Musical or Broadway style musical.   Many seasons there were two.  In fact, the second show ever presented under the moniker of CAS was a Broadway Musical, “A Chorus Line” in the 1986-87 season.

CAS is pleased to continue that tradition with Friday’s performance of Spring Awakening, winner of 8 Tony awards in 2007 and just a bit more than a year off its Broadway run.   In fact, it will be one of the fastest ‘from Broadway to Bloomsburg’ shows that CAS has been able to offer!

Proclaimed “the most explosive new musical since Rent,” Spring Awakening helped spawn the skyrocketing careers of several of the cast of Glee…including Glee’s leading star, Lea Michele.  John Moore (Denver Post) says “Spring Awakening is the most thrilling, discombobulating live theatre experience to hit the stage in a long, long time.”

Following in the steps of other rock-opera musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar, The Who’s TOMMY, and RENT, Spring Awakening is considered an anthem of today’s youth.  Featuring an electrifying rock score by Grammy Award-winners Steven Sater and Indie-rock composer Duncan Sheik, Spring Awakening has been heralded for its honest depiction of the issues of adolescence, sexuality, independence and the fear of not measuring up.  We’re sure it will be the talk around Bloomsburg, on campus and off, for days to come following Friday’s presentation.  Bloomsburg may never be the same.

The show begins at 8:00 Friday, April 8.  Stop by the box office located in Mitrani Hall lobby for tickets.
