Women’s basketball downs Wilmington

Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) scored a game-high 23 points and Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) added 20 points to lead the Bloomsburg University women’s basketball team to an 85-62 win over Wilmington University on Monday night.

Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) scored a game-high 23 points and Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) added 20 points to lead the Bloomsburg University women’s basketball team to an 85-62 win over Wilmington University on Monday night. The game was the first in the newly renovated Nelson Field House.

The team’s traded leads in the opening minutes of the game before the Huskies went on a 10-2 run grab a 19-12 advantage with 9:22 to go in the first half. Gallagher had a three-point play and a three-pointer in the run for Bloomsburg. The Wildcats came right back with an 11-3 run of its own to take what would be their final lead of the game at 23-22 with 6:20 to go in the half.

Bloomsburg countered with a 12-1 run to take control of the contest. Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) put the Huskies on top with a jumper 24-23, then Tanejha Smith (Allentown/William Allen) and Christine Serta (Drums/Hazleton Area) followed with layups with Wieller drilling a three-pointer in the rally to open up a 34-24 lead.

After Bloomsburg extended its lead to 41-27 on a Wieller three-pointer to start the second half, the Wildcats cut the deficit to eight, 49-41, with 14:44 to play on a basket by Kim Parker. The Huskies answered with a 12-2 run led by Wieller who had two three-pointers and Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) with one three. The Huskies would lead by as many as 26 points late in the game before settling for the 23 point victory.

Gallagher also added five assists and nine rebounds in the game, while Wieller had five assists. Also hitting double figures was Oxenrider who finished with 13 points. Amelia Simmons led Wilmington, 1-3, with 17 points.

Bloomsburg plays at Concordia (NY) on Wednesday night.
