Wilson Takes Home MVP for Team Irvin
Team Irvin, coached by legendary wide receiver Michael Irvin, cruised to a comfortable 49-27 victory over Team Rice, who was a star for the 49ers for 15 years, in the Pro Bowl on Sunday. Russell Wilson threw three touchdowns for the winning team, securing himself the MVP award for the game.
Team Irvin came out of the gate firing, with Wilson throwing a 61-yard pass to a streaking DeAndre Hopkins on their first play. After that play, it was clear that Michael Irvin’s team not only came to win, but win big. Team Rice did score on their first possession as well, but Wilson responded by putting together three consecutive touchdown drives, resulting in 21 unanswered points for Team Irvin. Wilson was relieved later in the game by Teddy Bridgewater and Jameis Winston, who each threw for two touchdowns.
The defensive side for Team Irvin also put in their fair share of domination. New York Giants cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie snagged two interceptions, with four other teammates also adding their name to the interceptions list.
Travis Kelce was the star for Team Rice, catching two touchdowns with 91 yards receiving total. He also had five receptions, the most by a receiver on either team.
Even though it seemed Team Irvin was playing hard, there was plenty of fun to be had during the game. Odell Beckham Jr. played free safety, Richard Sherman played wide receiver, and defensive lineman Michael Bennett even played QB for a play. During that play, Bennett took off for a huge touchdown run through a lackadaisical defense. This was unfortunately called back, as throughout most of the game, the two hand touch rule was in effect to prevent injuries.
Overall, the Pro Bowl seems to be in decline in terms of popularity. Just hours after the game had ended, articles were popping up all over the internet, calling for the Pro Bowl to be done away with. Fans don’t seem to find any joy watching it anymore. They expect an intense game that pins the best players in the league against each other, but all they get is the players fooling around, running trick plays and not taking the game very seriously. Despite all the hate, there are of course those that love watching a relaxing football game. The Pro Bowl merely fills their footballing void until the next week, when the Super Bowl takes place.
