Week Five NFL Recaps

Green Bay Packers 42 vs. Minnesota Vikings 10 (TNF on NFL Network)

Aaron Rodgers completed 12 of 17 passes for 156-yards and three touchdowns. Eddie Lacy rushed for 105-yards on just 13 carries while scoring twice. Green Bay’s defense sacked Christian Ponder six times and picked him off twice. One of the interceptions was translated into a 49-yard touchdown return by linebacker Julius Peppers.

Carolina Panthers 31 vs. Carolina Panthers 24

Jay Cutler completed 28 of 36 passes for 289-yards and two touchdowns. Cutler also ran for a score. Running back Matt Forte was on the receiving end of one Cutler scoring pass as he caught 12 passes for 105-yards. Forte racked up 166-yards of total offense. Meanwhile, Cam Newton completed 19 of 35 passes for 255-yards and a pair of touchdowns, including the game winner to tight end Greg Olsen in the fourth quarter.

Cleveland Browns 29 @ Tennessee Titans 28

Jake Locker got the start for the Titans. Locker threw for a touchdown and ran for another before leaving the game with a thumb injury. Charlie Whitehurst took over and threw for two more scores as the Titans took a 28-3 lead. Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer led the comeback by completing 21 of 37 passes for 292-yards and three touchdowns. Travis Benjamin was on the receiving end of two of those scores, including the game winner with 1:09 remaining. Cleveland erased a 25-point deficit to win, marking the biggest come from behind regular season victory since 1997.

Philadelphia Eagles 34 vs. St. Louis Rams 28

The Eagles special teams and defense picked up where they left off. Safety Chris Maragos scored off of a blocked punt and defensive end Cedric Thornton recovered a fumble in the end zone for another touchdown. Nick Foles completed 24 of 37 passes for 207-yards and two scores. However, Austin Davis led the Rams on three touchdown scoring drives in the fourth quarter. Davis ended up passing for 375-yards and three scores. St. Louis had one last chance to win the game, but Davis’ pass on fourth and 13 fell incomplete with 37 seconds left, allowing the Eagles to hang on.

New York Giants 30 vs. Atlanta Falcons 20

The Giants overcame a ten-point deficit to score 20 unanswered points and defeat the Falcons Sunday afternoon. Eli Manning completed 19 of 30 passes for 200-yards and two touchdowns. Rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. scored his first touchdown as a pro, as did rookie running back Andre Williams. The Giants won their third straight game following a dismal 0-2 start to the season.

New Orleans Saints 37 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31 (OT)

Drew Brees and the Saints built a 13-0 lead in the second quarter, but his three interceptions, including a “picked six”, and Mike Glennon’s two scoring passes, gave Tampa Bay a 31-20 fourth quarter lead. New Orleans rallied back to tie the score at 31 and send the game into overtime. Running back Khiry Robinson’s 18-yards touchdown run capped the comeback for the Saints. Brees finished 35 of 57 for 371-yards and two touchdowns. Glennon completed 19 of 32 passes for 249-yards and his leading receiver was Vincent Jackson, who made eight catches for 144-yards.

Dallas Cowboys 20 vs. Houston Texans 17 (OT)

DeMarco Murray carried 31 times for 136-yards. Tony Romo completed 28 of 41 passes for 324-yards and two touchdowns as Dallas built a ten point lead. Houston would come back to tie the score, when running back Arian Foster scored from a yard out with 41 seconds left to send the game into overtime. Foster finished with 157-yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. The Texans got the ball to start overtime, but Dallas’ defense forced a punt. Romo led a nine play, 59-yard drive that was highlighted by a 37-yard completion to Dez Bryant. Two plays later, Dan Bailey hit the game winning field goal from 49-yards out.

Buffalo Bills 17 @ Detroit Lions 14

A Matthew Stafford touchdown pass to Golden Tate and a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown by cornerback Rashean Mathis gave Detroit a 14-3 halftime lead. With E.J. Manuel benched, Kyle Orton got the start for Buffalo. Orton completed 30 of 43 passes for 308-yards. His touchdown pass to tight end Chris Gragg and a converted two-point run by Fred Jackson tied the score at 14. With time running out, Orton got kicker Dan Carpenter in range for a game winning 58-yard field goal. Carpenter nailed the attempt with four seconds remaining.

Indianapolis Colts 20 vs. Baltimore Ravens 13

When Baltimore and Indianapolis face each other, nothing comes easy. Andrew Luck rebounded from a pair of interceptions to pass for 312-yards. Luck threw a touchdown pass to tight end Dwayne Allen while adding another score on the ground. Joe Flacco completed 22 of 38 passes for 235-yards and engineered a four play, 80-yard scoring drive that ended with an 11-yard run by Justin Forsett. The Ravens made one last attempt to tie the game, but Flacco’s pass on fourth and three was dropped by Torrey Smith.

Pittsburgh Steelers 17 @ Jacksonville Jaguars 9

Ben Roethlisberger completed 26 of 36 passes for 273-yards and a touchdown. Pittsburgh’s defense limited the Jaguars to three field Josh Scobee field goals. Still, the Steelers only led by a point in the fourth quarter. Blake Bortles second interception of the game resulted into a 22-yard touchdown return by cornerback Bruce McCain. When Pittsburgh got the ball back with 4:05 remaining, their offense effectively ran out the clock to win the game.

Denver Broncos 41 vs. Arizona Cardinals 20

Peyton Manning’s performance obliterated Arizona’s unbeaten record. Manning completed 31 of 47 passes for 479-yards and four touchdowns. Two of those scores went to DeMaryius Thomas, who racked up 226 receiving yards on eight catches. The other two went to tight end Julius Thomas. Both of the Cardinals touchdowns came courtesy of running back Andre Ellington, who ran for a score and caught another. Ellington accounted for 144-yards of total offense in the game.

San Francisco 49ers 22 vs. Kansas City Chiefs 17

Colin Kaepernick completed 14 of 26 passes for 201-yards. Kaepernick also accounted for the 49ers only touchdown of the game, a nine-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Stevie Johnson. Kicker Phil Dawson kicked five field goals, including a 55-yarder. Alex Smith completed 17 of 31 passes for 175-yards and two touchdown passes.

San Diego Chargers 31 vs. New York Jets 0

Philip Rivers completed 20 of 28 passes for 288-yards and three touchdowns. Antonio Gates caught two of those scoring strikes. With Ryan Mathews remaining out of the lineup, rookie running back Branden Oliver got the start. Oliver rushed for 114-yards on 19 carries, caught four passes for 68 more, and scored twice. San Diego held the Jets to 60-yards passing along with 151-yards of total offense. In the end, the Chargers became the first team to record a shutout this season.

New England Patriots 43 vs. Cincinnati Bengals 17 (SNF on NBC)

Going into Sunday night, the Cincinnati Bengals were the lone unbeaten team in the NFL. After Sunday night, they were knocked from those ranks. New England had their number all night long. Tom Brady completed 22 of 35 passes for 292-yards and two touchdowns. Brady benefitted from a six catch, 100-yard, and one touchdown performance from Rob Gronkowski. Stevan Ridley carried 27 times, gained 113-yards, and scored once. The Patriots offense rebounded after a dismal performance against the Chiefs last Monday night.

Seattle Seahawks 27 @ Washington Redskins 17 (MNF on ESPN)

Russell Wilson completed 18 of 24 passes for 201-yards and two touchdowns. Wilson also rushed for 122-yards on 11 carries and scored a touchdown on the ground. Marshawn Lynch carried 17 times for 72-yards while racking up 45 more yards on five receptions and had a receiving touchdown. Kirk Cousins completed 21 of 36 passes for 283-yards and two scores, including a 60-yard touchdown to DeSean Jackson. Jackson racked up 157-yards on five catches. Seattle sealed the win when Steven Hauschka made a 43-yard field goal with 21 seconds remaining in the game.
