Veteran RB LeGarrette Blount Retires
On Saturday, Dec. 5, veteran NFL running back LeGarrette Blount announced his retirement on Instagram.
Blount played a total of nine seasons in the NFL which saw him become a three-time Super Bowl champion.
Blount’s statement began, “I just want to inform y’all that I’m officially retiring. I have thought long and hard about this decision, and I’ve talked to my closest family members and friends about this.”
Blount was known for his bruiser mentality, sight for the end zone, and his ability to stay on his feet in any tackling situation. His most famous run occurred on Nov. 20, 2011. Blount ran over, and broke free from eight Green Bay Packers defenders.
LeGarrette was first brought into the league by Jeff Fisher and the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent from Oregon University.
Blount did not get any playing time until he landed with the Buccaneers during the 2010-2011 season. The Buccaneers then traded Blount to the New England Patriots in 2013 for one season, before Blount signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Steelers released Blount in November of 2014 which led him to land back with the New England Patriots. Blount would then play for the Patriots the following two seasons while winning two Super Bowls with the organization until being signed by the Eagles for the ’17-’18 NFL season.
Although Blount’s time with the Eagles was just one season, it was certainly one to remember. Blount assisted the franchise in winning their first-ever Super Bowl ring against his former in SB Lll. Blount would then be picked up by the Detroit Lions where his career came to an end.
LeGarrette Blount finished his career with 56 rushing TDs, 6,306 rushing yards, and an average of 4.2 yards per rush. Blount also tacked on two receiving TDs, and 454 receiving yards on 64 receptions. Not only did Blount produce this fantastic stat line, but he is also a 3-time Super Bowl Champion. Blount assisted New England to victory against the Seattle Seahawks in SB XLlX. Blount then assisted the Patriots in their impossible 28-3 comeback against the Atlanta Falcons in SB Ll. Blount went back-to-back years with a Super Bowl title after defeating the Patriots in SB Lll with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Blount closed his statement by saying, “All in all, I loved being a part of these organizations and the people involved in them. I’m excited to move on to the next phase in my life!”
Blount then jokingly announced, “Now everyone can stop asking ‘are you done?'”
