USA Olympic Results: Gold Medal Edition
Throughout the games athletes were aiming to repeat their gold medal streaks or try to aim for the top for the first time. During the Winter games, there were shocks and upsets during the events. The United States only took nine gold medals in their total. Here are the athletes that won gold.
Alpine Skiing:
Ted Ligety proved that he is the king in Giant Slalom, where he became the first American man to win two gold Olympic medals in Alpine skiing. His last medal was gold in Turin in 2006.
Mikaela Shiffrin the 18-year-old alpine skier became the youngest Slalom Olympic champion. She is expected to come back in 2018 to claim more medals.
Figure Skating:
Meryl Davis and Charlie White have been dance partners since kids and made history by winning the first Ice Dance gold for the U.S. They beat out the Canada pair that won gold in Vancouver.
Freestyle Skiing:
Joss Christenson was part of the historic podium sweep along with Gus Kenworthy and Nick Goepper. He lost his father months before Sochi and was a last minute placement on the team.
David Wise won the first ski halfpipe gold. Only 23, he is married and has a young daughter. During the event he kept a heart-shaped rock that his wife gave him for good luck. Maddie Bowman snagged gold in the women’s ski halfpipe event where she is first to do so in the new Olympic event.
Snowboarding:
Sage Kotsenburg made both US and Olympic history by not only winning the first gold in Sochi, but in the new event Men’s Slopestyle. Jamie Anderson took the second gold for the United States in Women’s Slopestyle the next day.
Kaitlyn Farrington defeated the defending Olympic Halfpipe champion Torah Bright by .25 points to win gold.
