Penn State Update: Paterno Out As Head Coach
Paterno fired from Head Coach position.
Head Coach Joe Paterno had been relieved of his duties as head coach by the Penn State Board of Trustees. Paterno has been the coach of the Penn State Football team since 1966 holding a record of 409-136-3. This decision comes only a few days after the child abuse sex scandal surfaced involving former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.
Paterno issued a statement early Wednesday, Nov. 9 saying that he would retire after the 2011 season was complete. The board of trustees then decided that the legendary coach would not continue effective immediately. Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley has been named interim coach of the Nittany Lions football team.
University President, Graham Spanier was also fired due to the scandal and is being replaced temporarily by provost Rodney Erickson.
Penn State is currently ranked 12th in the latest AP National Poll and has three regular season games remaining. They will take on No. 19 Nebraska this Saturday at Beaver Stadium.
