Ovechkin Reaches then Breaks 1,000-Point Milestone

Wednesday night inside Verizon Center in Washington D.C., Alex Ovechkin reached and surpassed the 1,000-point mark of his career. “Ovi”, as he’s known to many, tallied two goals against the Pittsburgh Penguins for his 1,000th and 1,001st career points in the NHL.

Per NHL.com and Elias Sports Bureau, “Ovechkin became the 84th player in NHL history to score 1,000 points, the 37th to do so with one franchise, and the first to do it all with the Capitals (546 goals, 455 assists). He did it in his 880th NHL game, making him the second-fastest active player behind Jaromir Jagr (763 games).”

Ovechkin’s 1,000th point came in true “Ovi” fashion with a wicked wrist shot past Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury just 35 seconds into Wednesday night’s contest. It was bedlam inside Verizon Center and the crowd gave the “Great 8” a standing ovation for his milestone achievement.

The second goal, his 1,001st point, came off the power play just over eight minutes into the second period. Ovechkin’s favorite spot at the top of the left face-off circle proved itself once again.

Washington went on to win the game 5-2 and Ovechkin once again proved why he is one of the greatest NHL players in history.
