Flyers Stay Winless with Shootout Loss to Ducks
Tuesday night’s Flyers loss to the Ducks was a tough one as they dropped a 4-3 decision in a shootout. It marked the second consecutive shootout loss for the Flyers and also kept them out of the win column once again.
Although the team has not won a game yet this season there are some positives to take away from their losses. Wayne Simmonds is one of those positives. Simmonds already has seven points in four games and is tied for the lead in the NHL in points. He is the stand out star for the Flyers so far this year. Players like Claude Giroux and Jake Voracek have been doing well too. Each one has had at least one point in every game so far. Voracek scored a beautiful backhand goal in Tuesday’s game which forced overtime against the Ducks. The top three forwards for the Flyers have not disappointed in their first few games.
The main problem for the orange and black has been their lack of consistency. Already this year there have been times where they have played sloppy and lazily as a whole. Hockey games require a full 60 minute effort to win a game and the Flyers haven’t been able to do that yet this season. There have been bright spots in their play when they control the puck and pace of the game but there hasn’t been too much of that. Bad defensive play and a sometimes unproductive offense has stifled the Flyers a lot already this year. Things need to change and they need to change quickly if the Flyers want to win.
Down the stretch, the Flyers are facing some very tough opponents in their next five games. They are hitting the road to play Dallas on Saturday, Chicago on Oct. 21, and Pittsburgh on Oct. 22. Then, they come home to the Wells Fargo Center to battle Detroit on Oct. 25 and the defending Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings on Oct. 28. It’s a tough month for the Flyers and things will only get harder for them if they don’t start playing better and winning games. Only time will tell how things unfold.
