College Basketball Weekly Preview: Nov. 25th – Dec. 1st 2013

College Basketball Weekly Preview: Nov. 25– Dec 1 2013

The college basketball season is in full swing and so far it has been one of the most exciting starts in recent memory.

There have been electrifying performances, like, Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart 39 point outburst against the Memphis Tigers, and major upsets, like Charlotte defeating the number 7 team in the country, the Michigan Wolverines. The new emphasis on hand checking has really leveled the playing field. It has kept the mid major teams in games with some of the best teams in the country. That was never more evident when Vermont nearly knocked off the Duke Blue Devils in Cameron Indoor Stadium! Let’s take a look at the week ahead.

Maui Invitational:

The, always exciting, Maui Invitational tips off this week, and will contain some of the best teams in the country. The court features Syracuse, Minnesota, Baylor, and Gonzaga. Syracuse and Minnesota will meet up in first round action on Monday, Nov. 25, at 5:30 on ESPN 2. The Championship game will be held Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 5 p.m. on ESPN, so be sure to tune in. The Maui Invitational is known for featuring some of the best teams in the country and that surely doesn’t change this year.

Alabama vs. #6 Duke Wednesday, Nov. 27, ESPN 2
Duke received a scare from the Vermont Catamounts Sunday, as the Blue Devils barely outlasted the Catamounts, 91-90. The Blue Devils are very talented, but flawed; they lack a big time rim protector and have struggled to adjust to the new hand checking emphasis. Their next test will be the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Crimson Tide is not nearly as talented as Duke, but they have a strong interior and heady guards. The Tide are a physical bunch and it should be a great test for the Blue Devils.

Florida State vs. #16 Florida Friday, Nov. 29, ESPN 2

Florida State has really surprised people early on this season; they were picked to finish towards the bottom half of the Atlantic Coast Conference. But with a win over #10 VCU and a narrow loss to Michiga

n, the Seminoles have gotten some national recognition. Florida will be getting their fantastic senior point guard, Scottie Wilbekin, back this week, along with Dorian Finney-Smith. The loss of their star freshman Kasey Hill will hurt Florida, and we’ll see how much versus the Seminoles.

Belmont vs. #10 VCU Sunday, Dec. 1, ESPN 2

The upset minded Belmont Bears will have chance at another marquee win as they look to knock off the VCU Golden Rams. Belmont has already defeated North Carolina at North Carolina this season and w
ill be a tough test for VCU. VCU has underwhelmed so far this season but are still very talented. We’ll see if Belmont is up for another upset.

That concludes the college basketball preview for the week of Nov. 25 – Dec. 1. It should be another exciting week for college basketball, Enjoy!
