Shooting at Purdue University Leaves One Student Dead
One student is left dead after a gunman enters a classroom at Purdue University.
A Student at Purdue University has been shot and killed this past Tuesday, Jan. 21. Shots were fired by a lone gunman in the Indiana school’s electrical engineering building.
According to CNN News, officials have determined that the male suspect came into the building with one particular target in mind. After the incident he immediately left the building and was then arrested by a city police officer.
Purdue Police Chief John Cox has identified the suspect as Cody Cousins, a 23-year-old student and the victim as Andrew Boldt, a 21-year-old teaching assistant and senior student. Cox says that it appeared to be an intentional and isolated attack. At this time, police do not have a detailed motive.
Following the shooting, students received text messages from the university instructing them to take shelter where they were. The warning was later lifted at 1:30 p.m. except for the electrical engineering building so that it could be further investigated by officials.
Later that day it was announced that class would be cancelled for the rest of Tuesday as well as Wednesday. A candlelight vigil was held at 8 p.m. after to incident that unnerved many of the students. The university is also offering grief counseling to those trying to understand and come to terms with the violence that occurred.
Authorities have repeatedly stated that they believe that there are currently no threats to the student body, faculty or staff. However,many people believe that it will take time for the community to heal.
This attack follows a shooting at Widener University in Pennsylvania less than 24 hours before, leaving one injured and a suspect still on the loose.
