The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area baseball team has a new name, and a much improved stadium. After spending most of last season under renovation, PNC Field opened its gates this year to a team with a new name- the RailRiders. They are the new AAA affiliate of the New York Yankees, and they are here to stay. PNC Field is located in Moosic, Pennsylvania, about an hour from Bloomsburg University.
After the renovations, the stadium seats a little over 10,000 fans at full capacity, with plenty of space in the outfield for standing spectators. Some of the changes that were made to the ballpark include a better draining system under the field, extended seating down both baselines, a catwalk that is visible as soon as you enter the stadium, as well as a party deck next to each foul pole. Perhaps the biggest change to the stadium has been made in the outfield, where until this season; there was nothing beyond the walls. Instead, the architects of EwingCole, who took on the task of renovating the stadium, decided to add a walkway that covers the entire outfield area. From foul pole to foul pole, fans can walk all the way around the stadium at their leisure while still maintaining a view of the game. In addition, a grass lawn was put in around the right-centerfield area for fans to sit and relax during the game. There is also a kids zone in centerfield for parents to take their children for entertainment.
As for the team itself, the RailRiders have several mascots walking around throughout the game, with “Champ” being the head mascot. Champ is a nine foot tall superhero with a giant violet-colored nose, and two big yellow noodle shaped ears. They visit fans in their seats, pose for pictures and participate in various activities on the field between innings. Also, there are ushers everywhere you turn, always willing to help and provide friendly service to fans. If you are looking for something good to eat, there are almost a half a dozen food stations located around the park with various choices at each one.
So if you and your family are looking for something to do during a lull in the middle of the week, or a fun activity on the weekend, take a drive down to PNC Field to watch the RailRiders. Tickets are very inexpensive, ranging from 7-12 dollars depending on where you would like to sit. It is a family friendly park that will ensure everyone has a good time.
Currently the RailRiders are third in their division with a record of 9-10. Their next two homestands will be from May 6- May 13, and from May 23- May 26.
