A Bloomsburg University student died “early yesterday morning” according to Acting Vice President for Student Affairs, James McCormack.

Michael Somerville, a Bloomsburg native, was a third-year student at Bloomsburg University.

The cause of death was “injuries sustained from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound” and was ruled a suicide, according to Columbia County Coroner, Jeremy R. Reese.

Somerville is the son of Dione Somerville, former Vice President of Student Affairs. Dione Somerville separated from the university on Oct. 17.

Somerville, age 21, was an offensive lineman on the football team and a Shippensburg University transfer.

Somerville’s death is the fourth student death of the Fall 2019 semester.

On Sept. 14, first-year student Justin P. King was found dead after sustaining injuries following a fall behind Crag Mansion.

On Oct. 4, second-year student Curtis L. Melville died in a motor vehicle accident.

On Oct. 15, first-year student Nicholas Medveckus was pronounced dead in his dormitory.
