On Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m., the Bloomsburg University Men’s soccer team will take the field against Shippensburg in a PSAC contest. However, the Huskies will be battling more than just the Raiders. They will be battling cancer as they playing to raise awareness the disease.
Paul Payne, the Bloomsburg men’s soccer coach, started the foundation in the fall of 2009. His goal is to honor his late friend Joe Bochicchio, the former Women’s Head Coach at Scranton University, who passed away from the melanoma July of 2007.
In the first year after Red Card Cancer was created, 17 teams (16 college teams and 1 high school team) joined the effort. The program has now spread over several state borders and includes D.C. United of the MLS.
At the game there will be raffle tickets available with the proceeds being donated to the Red Card Cancer fund. There will also be bracelets for a $3 donation, as well as shirts available for a $20 donation.
All proceeds go to the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins medicine.
