Playboy Will No Longer Feature Nude Photos
Since Hugh Hefner launched his iconic Playboy magazine in 1953 featuring their first bombshell bunny, Marilyn Monroe, it has been a staple of every man’s bathroom and teen’s secret under-the-bed-stash. Why? Because beautiful nude women laced the pages. However, their R-rated pictures will now take a very PG-13 turn beginning next year according to CNN.
The magazine has dropped to selling only 800,000 copies monthly as opposed to the six to seven million copies sold in years past (CNN). Hefner blames the internet for this. His chief executer, Scott Flanders, says, “You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free. And so it’s just passé at this juncture.”
For decades, the magazine has fulfilled boys and men’s fantasies. Teens snuck the magazine under their covers and read it secretly once their parents were asleep, and guys would hide it in hopes of keeping it from their girlfriend or wife. With the growth of the internet and social media, it is much easier to find provocative content. The whole idea of these super sexy photos fulfilling dirty fantasies is just old news at this point. They want a more professional and classy appeal.
Their sex columnist, Mr. Jones, assures the magazine will still include their journalism, stories, interviews, and compromising poses of women, they just will not be fully nude. Whether or not they will still have a centerfold is up in the air. Flanders says, “We’re going after the guy with a job,” and their new look is the way to target him according to New York Times.
The executives of Playboy say their 12-year-old selves are disappointed with their adult selves, but it is the right move for the magazine.
It is hard to believe Hefner, 89, is about to delete the thing he always loved the most about the magazine. Perhaps, he has finally seen enough nude women.
