Why Girl Scout Cookie Season is The Best Time of Year
The snow is melting, the sun is shining and the birds are chirping. This can only mean one thing. No, I’m not talking about spring. I’m talking about the best time of the year: Girl Scout cookies are being sold. It’s that magical time when you can buy a box of cookies from the troops of little girls selling them outside of Walmart or you can order them from your mom’s friend’s co-worker’s daughter. Only at this time can you justifiably eat a whole sleeve in under 20 minutes without being judged by others.
Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low, who assembled 18 girls to form the first local chapter in Savannah, Ga., created the Girl Scouts over 100 years ago in 1912. Since its inception, the organization grew exponentially. Today, The Girl Scouts of USA has a membership of over 3.2 million young girls and adult women. They also have an alumnus of 59 million women across the U.S. Their values of diversity and tackling hard societal issues make the organization a strong appeal to many young girls.
The Girl Scouts began selling cookies in 1917 to finance their various activities. Mistletoe troop in Muskogee, Okla. were the first troop to bake and sell the cookies in a local high school cafeteria as a service project. The sale of the famous cookies has grown and evolved over the years into what it is today.
Currently, there are 12 different types of delicious cookies for purchase. They include Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Do-si-dos, Cranberry Citrus Crisps, Lemonades, Rah-Rah Raisins, Savannah Smiles, Thanks-a-lot, Toffee-tastic and Trios (not all cookies are available in all regions; click here to find cookies available in your area).
Growing up, I’m sure that we all had a Girl Scout cookie at least once. When you grow up with the cookies, you tend to favor one kind over another. If I had to pick my favorite, it would be Thin Mints. These are the best cookies hands down! They are chocolaty, minty and melt in your mouth. I am not ashamed to say that I could probably eat a whole box, that’s 32 cookies, in under an hour. They are probably one of my favorite foods ever. Plus they’re vegan, so that makes them healthy, right?
