Paws For a Cause
Over 15 dogs made a special appearance at Bloomsburg University for the Paws for a Cause event. It took place Monday, April 10 at the Academic Quad from 12-4 p.m. Students were able to donate money to help shelter animals and meet dogs who are up for adoption, along with rescued therapy dogs. Groups involved with the event included Students Saving Shelter Animals (SSSA), BUnow, pet therapy organizations, and Bloomsburg University Greek life.
The event acted as a fundraiser organized by Dr. Ganahl’s Publicity and PR course in the Mass Communications Department. It also promoted the SSSA club, as well as pet therapy. Money was raised through a dog kissing booth, a bake sale, and donations. BU Greek life members brought baked goods to the bake sale or donated money/dog products as volunteer community service. Through the kissing booth, BU Greek Life, and donations, Paws for a Cause was able to raise around $250. The money will go to the Bloomsburg Animal Resource Center and Danville SPCA.
The SSSA club had four shelter dogs at the event and several people showed interest in adopting them. The club was selling t-shirts and had donation boxes set up. They were able to raise $320 and promote the adoption of shelter dogs. The shelter dogs included Dodge, Tyson, Sadie, and Shadow. They are still adoptable and can be found at the Danville SPCA website.
It is estimated that around 600 students showed up to the event in the four hours that it took place. An original Snapchat filter was created specifically for the event so that students could use it when they posted pictures. Nearly 500 people used the filter which resulted in the filter collectively receiving 41,800 views.
Pet therapy also brought in dogs to help out with the event. They brought in five dogs, many of whom were rescued from shelters themselves. Therapy dogs included Maverick, Eliza, Lucky, Riley, and Dozer. If you missed out on Paws for a Cause, the therapy dogs are the ones seen at “Pet Therapy” days on campus in the Student Service Center, which occur monthly.
Due to the nice weather, many Bloomsburg students even brought their own dogs, and this only contributed more to the fun (the more dogs, the merrier). Here is a video by Trey Lingle covering the event. Check out some photos of the event taken by Cierra Spurlock.
