New Leadership Center Comes To BU

Students at BU are constantly looking for opportunities to gain new leadership experiences as a college student before they take the next step in their professional lives.  Brand new for the 2013-2014 school year is a Bloomsburg University campus office that does just that – CLE.

The Center for Leadership and Engagement (CLE) was developed in 2012 after a series of focus groups and research studies were conducted to examine ways to better the serve the needs of students.  Under the direction of Mr. George Kinzel, founder of BUSTED and DASL Campus Leadership, this new center focuses on three key areas:   Leadership Development, Community Engagement & Volunteerism, and Student Organizational Support.

The new center, located on the backside of Luzerne in the former fireside lounge, provides student organizations, groups and clubs with the opportunity to utilize their space later than any other office space on campus.  The office is open until 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 2 p.m. on Fridays.  Organizations can use the space to host meetings, plan events, conduct training of officers or even as a study hall.

Students can enhance their resumes and professional portfolios by participating in the multi-level BU Leadership Certificate program.  By doing so, they will gain essential employment competencies and practical leadership experiences.  Level 1 of the Leadership Certificate includes participation in a series of training workshops and a certain # of hours of engagement in a student club/organization along with a certain # of hours of community service work.  In Level 2, students dive deeper into specific tracks of leadership exploration including Student Organizational Leadership, Community Engagement Leadership, Social Justice Leadership and Group Leadership.

Registration for Level 1 of the Leadership Certification program begins on Oct. 21.  Applications can be picked up at the CLE Office in Luzerne or by emailing gkinzel@bloomu.edu  There are no fees to participate.

The key to becoming successful in the most competitive job market ever is to “Step Up” and “Get Involved.”  By serving as an active member of the Bloomsburg campus community, students will be able to make a positive impact and understand how leadership & service can enhance their career pursuits.

The CLE office is undergoing its first stages of transformation, with a total revamp on the way.  Clubs and organizations will be able to put their own touches on the new office, projected to open Spring 2014, by putting their touches on the mural that will be erected on the wall that faces the entrance of the new CLE office.

If you are looking to become more involved, or have any questions, feel free to contact the office at (570) 389-4354, or email stcle@bloomu.edu
