The New Speaker of the House

Weeks of failure to find a speaker after the ousting of Kevin McCarthy, the US House of Representatives has a new Speaker. Welcome Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana.

Who is Mike Johnson

Representative Johnson is a relatively fresh face in politics, winning his first political office in 2015 as a State Representative in Louisiana. Less than a year later, he would run and win the Louisiana 4th District in 2016, earning him a spot in the US House.

Johnson, a staunch conservative, has voiced his opposition to Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage across the US while claiming that allowing same-sex marriage would lead to people marrying animals and adult-to-child marriages. He has opposed the legalization of marijuana and medical marijuana, claiming it to be a gateway drug for future abuse.

Johnson has been a strong ally of Donald Trump. He served as a defense lawyer in both of Donald Trump’s impeachment trials. Johnson supported Donald Trump’s claims of a fraudulent 2020 election.

When it comes to foreign policy, Johnson supports ending aid to Ukraine. He has voiced his support for Israel in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Republicans had struggled for the last three weeks to find a new speaker, with three other nominees being chosen but only one making it to the House floor for a vote. Initially, Johnson did not want to be the Speaker, throwing his support behind Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio). However, behind closed doors, Johnson mentioned being interested in the speakership if Jordan failed.
