#Repeal the 19th: An Overdue Wakeup Call to Trump Supporters

On Aug. 18, 1920, women were granted the right to vote in America with the ratification of the 19th amendment.
Trump supporters have taken to Twitter with the trending hashtag #RepealThe19th. They were calling to end a woman’s right to vote in order to get republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, elected into office. Although the hashtag first appeared last month, it gained speed and support on Oct. 19 when Twitter user Nate Silver posted two diagrams of what the election results would likely look like if only men versus only women could vote.

Unfortunately, this was not just one man’s ignorant opinion as many were quick to agree with them, including a number of women.
At this point in the election, I’m not entirely sure why I would be surprised by this—coming from Trump and his supporters—but I was. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion and political views; it’s one of the aspects that make America great. Having an opinion is however not the same as spewing hate and ignorance.
That is exactly what Trump’s train wreck of a campaign has brought to America. His morals would surely set the U.S. back hundreds of years with his misogynistic, racist, and sexist ideals. Sure, there are more than a few assholes in America who fit this bill; I just never thought one would be on the presidential ballot.
If it’s necessary to repeal an amendment that granted more than half of the population the ability to vote in order to get a man elected into office, I think that’s saying something. Something strong and disgusting that can’t be ignored, even by devoted Trump supporters.
Enough is enough. Stop the ignorance and spread of hate.
