President Confirms bin Laden’s Death
Osama bin Laden is dead. After years of searching, it has been announced that the master-mind of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 is deceased. The announcement of his death spread like fire throughout multiple news stations on Sunday, May 1, at approximately 10:40 p.m. It was reported that bin Laden was suspected dead of a bombing by American Military actions one week ago. Before announcing the news, officials were waiting for DNA results to come in from the remains of the alleged body of bin Laden. The body in question was confirmed to be that of Osama bin Laden Sunday night.
President Barack Obama gave a speech that night at 11:35 p.m. from the East Room in White House, to make the announcement that Osama bin Laden is dead. He began his speech by saying, “Tonight I can report to the American people and to the world, the United States has conducted an operation that has killed Osama bin Laden…”
President Obama let the world know that he was briefed on a possible lead on bin Laden’s whereabouts last August. The President said that in the last week of April, he had enough evidence to finally take action. Further into his speech, he noted, “Today, at my direction, The United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.” This statement denotes that the operation took place on May 1, contrary to the prior reports stating that the operation was conducted the week before. A small team of Americans carried out this mission.
Obama reassured that no Americans were harmed during the operation. The President was adamant in reiterating the fact that the United States is not and never will be at war with Islam. Obama mentioned that he believed that Osama bin Laden declared a war on the Pakistani nation. He said that his team spoke to his Pakistani counterparts and they both agreed in saying, “This is a good and historic day for both of our nations.” Obama ended his historical speech by saying, “Finally, let me say to the families who have lost loved ones to Al qaeda’s terror, justice has been done.” Although his speech was roughly only about 10 minutes in length, this night will not be forgotten.
