Potentially infected inmates are being transferred to Pennsylvania

Prison Cell

Inmates from other states are being transferred to Pennsylvania’s prisons in Wayne and Union counties. The prisons are located in Waymart, Lewisburg and Allenwood.

Several inmates are being brought from the inundated New York, which had one of their prisoners test positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

On March 25, the Sunbury Daily Item of Northumberland County reported that one of the prisoners recently transferred to the Allenwood penitentiary from Oklahoma City and was immediately sent to Geisinger Medical Center to get tested for COVID-19. Several other inmates were reported to have fevers and similar symptoms.

Both Sens. Pat Toomey and Bob Casey along with Rep. Fred Keller have been opposing the transfers.

Rep. Keller has been the most vocal in raising his concerns and has attempted to contact the Bureau of Prisons.

This is a developing story.

Additional information can be found at The Milton Standard Journal, The Sunbury Daily Item, and Rep. Fred Keller’s website.
