Fort Hood Shooter Convicted and Sentenced to Death
After nearly four-year-trial, Fort Hood Shooter was sentenced to death by 13-member military jury.
Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was sentenced to death by military jury on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013. Hasan was charged and convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder.
Nov. 5, 2009 marks the day of one of the most deadly attack of a soldiers by another soldiers in recent history at Fort 
Hood military base located in Texas.
According to CNN, it took the 13-member jury less than two hours to reach a decision, and the president announced to the court that Hasan “be put to death.” The convicted murderer said nothing and appeared emotionless when the verdict was announced. Hasan claimed earlier in the trial that if he were to die it would not be a punishment and saw it as an opportunity to become a martyr.
Hasan served as his own attorney throughout the trial, but his refusal to offer any defense on his behalf made the panel’s findings unanimous. The judge was quick to accept the verdict although it could take a few more months before the sentence is made official by the Army General. The convening authority has the option to reduce the sentence to life in prison without parole.
If quick and speedy justice is the goal, then history may not be the government or even Hasan’s side . The last military execution was in 1961 and there is currently five men facing lethal injection due to the 1961 trial. Although it may take many years for him to actually face death, the Fort Hood victim’s family members believe that justice someday will be served.
