As the former bookstore’s last bricks are torn down, Huskies can begin to feel the excitement of a new and impressive Residence Hall destined to open in the fall of 2017. Just a little over a year away, the new building plans show many new features that are not included in any other res hall.

With seven stories and 163,000 square feet, the unnamed building is a giant that doesn’t lack esthetic appeal. Set in an “S” shape, it features 138 suites which will house 397 students in single, double, triple & quad layouts.

An outside fire pit, second-story outdoor plaza, two lounges on every floor, and a “green” roof with sustainable plants are just a few of the new amenities planned to be incorporated in the new building.

Although room layout is still a mystery, the ground floor will host the University Store, Food Service area, and the district cooling plant. The first floor will be the new location of the mail center and floors one through six will be student housing. This is the first intentional multipurpose building BU  built. The food service area on the ground floor will feature a Chick-fil-a and Qdoba. Both will accept payment in flex dollars, Husky Gold, cash or credit cards.

The Bloomsburg website lists a few details of what students and faculty can expect during construction.

  • A construction fence that will be installed. It will surround the entire exterior of the building. Heavy construction equipment will also be located on the site and traveling on Second Street.
  • The sidewalk on Second Street, directly in front of the current University store site, will be altered to move pedestrian traffic away from the construction site.
  • The pedestrian walkway between Luzerne Hall and the current University Store will be accessible for students traveling through that section of campus.
  • The sidewalk in front of Lycoming Hall will be open.
  • Construction job trailers will be located on the south lawn area of Ben Franklin Hall.
  • Some hazardous materials will be removed from the interior of the building, but will be removed in a safe manner, in accordance with all appropriate safety regulations.

Information about the construction project is updated frequently and can be found on the Residence Life Website and the Bloomsburg websites.
