To Pimp A Butterfly
Dropping albums without giving fans an exact release date seems to be the new “trend.” The Compton rapper, Kendrick Lamar, has finally released his third studio album on March 13, on iTunes (its original release date was set for March 23). A few days before on March 10, Lamar released the title of his album along with its cover art, discharging both on his Instagram page. The album features notable artists such as Dr. Dre, Pharrell Williams, Willie B, Terrance Martin, and Thundercat who worked on the album with Lamar. If you admire artists such as Frank Ocean, J. Cole, and Lupe Fiasco, this is an album you can truly “zone out” to, and get lost in Lamar’s multiple elements of funk, spoken word poetry, jazz. Some have described it as, “honest, fearful, and unapologetic” from Rap-Up.com.
On the day of ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’s’ “accidental” release, the album broke its own record by having an exact count of 9.6 million streams on Spoitfy in that day alone; the following day that number advanced up to 9.8 million. Not only was this nourishing for the rapper, he also received some very inspirational reviews and comments from some of the music industries biggest artists from Kanye West to Justin Timberlake, Talib Kweli, and even Taylor Swift. They all shared different feedback and opinions on the album on their Twitter pages.

Now that this album has finally been released, fans are getting ecstatic about his collaboration album with J. Cole said to be released later on this year. I can honestly say this album speaks truth. Kendrick Lamar is so raw with his words he holds nothing back as far as what’s in going in the black community today, and includes what he feels will happen if the world continues on the same path it’s moving. I believe ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ is not for all ears, but if you are a music listener open to anything, I highly recommend giving this album the opportunity to not only blow your mind, but open up your eyes to reality.
