Record Store Day Announces Date and New Ambassador
Mark your calendars everyone because the best holiday of the year is almost upon us, Record Store Day.
April 22 marks the day where Boomers, Generation X-ers, and Millennial hipsters alike can flock to their nearest record store and cash in on the sweet deals from their favorite artists both present and past.
This holiday was conceived in 2007 to help spread awareness to indie record stores. The first actual record store day was Apr. 19 2008. Record shops all around the world celebrate this day of independently owned stores except for Antarctica (according to their website)!
Each year, the day has a “Record Store Day Ambassador”. In years past it has been Dave Grohl, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, and Jack White. Annie Clark, otherwise known as St. Vincent has been chosen as this year’s Ambassador. When accepting her position for this year, Clark made a humorous “Funny or Die” video. She has said, “I do not take my duties lightly”. Being a frequent supporter of record stores and vinyl, it only makes sense to have her be head b*tch in charge for a day.
If you go to their website, you can find a list of participating record stores and a disclaimer that reads,
“…Those stores are all INDEPENDENT, which means not only are they not owned by a corporation, they aren’t run or influenced or told what to do by us here at Record Store Day either. That’s why we tell you to be sure to CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL STORE. Being mentioned on this site should not be taken as a guarantee that something will be available at all stores listed on this site”
So it is in your best interest, if you wish to participate, to check in with your local record store to see if you can get the most out of your day!
