Birthday Concert Series for Bowie Begins Next Year

The year 2016 has seen many losses from the world’s most talented artists. Prince, Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey, one of the founding members of the Eagles, Paul Kantner, a founding member of Jefferson Airplane and Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, just to name a few. One of the first to pass away this year, however, was David Bowie.

An artist whose career spans decades and has influenced many who have come before him, Bowie shocked the world just ten days after the beginning of the New Year. At the age of 69, he passed away after a private battle with cancer. This was just two days after the release of his final album, “Blackstar”.

Many musicians and artists poured their hearts out to the public following his death. Many took to social media to explain their thoughts. Lady Gaga performed a tribute melody in his honor this year at the 2016 Grammy Awards. On March 31, Bowie was honored at Carnegie Hall with performances by the Pixies, Debbie Harry, Cyndi Lauper and Michael Stipe of R.E.M.

In just over a month, the anniversary of his death will be upon us. However, there is a much joyous date that comes just two days before it: his 70th birthday. How will Bowie and music fans alike commemorate this date? Being that it is his first birthday without him physically being on earth.

Per, there will be a “global concert series” in tribute to the singer. This will start in London on Jan. 8; Bowie’s birthday. On his official site, the tag line is: “A very special David Bowie Birthday Concert. Bowie people performing Bowie music, Bowie style.” A message also reads, “Stay tuned for venue announcement.”

2016 has been a year that people will never forget, just like David Bowie’s career.
