Are You Ready for a New Scrooge?

A Christmas Carol, a Charles Dicken’s classic, has seen many adaptations in its day, and it sounds like another might be on its way. In this contemporary remake, the iconic Ebenezer Scrooge will be played by rapper and actor, Ice Cube.
Because of Ice Cube’s gangster rap background and his mostly comedic roles (think of 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, and Are We There Yet?), it is a bit of a surprise to hear that he will be in the remake of such a classic piece. Then again, Ice Cube is known to be tough and have a “trademark scowl” so maybe Scrooge’s humbug-ness is the perfect role for him.
In this remake of A Christmas Carol, Scrooge will be a wealthy real estate mogul who will be visited by the ghost of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Just like in all of the adaptations, these ghosts will help Scrooge take a good look at his life and lead him to redemption.
This newest remake, titled Humbug, will come out in 2017, according to Deadline. They also commented on the bidding battle for the possession of Humbug: Universal Pictures, MGM, New Line, and Disney all placed bids, with Universal Pictures ultimately winning.
Ice Cube will be making a nice amount on this film with his eight-figure salary mark. Not only is he playing the main role, but Ice Cube will be coproducing the film as well.
Ice Cube has produced a decent amount of films, with Straight Outta Compton being his latest. Straight Outta Compton was just released this past August. The movie tells the story of Ice Cube, played by his real life son, and his early rap career with the rap group NWA.
Before Humbug is released, we will see Ice Cube’s production skills in Ride Along 2 and Barbershop 3. With those two films being released in 2016, and Humbug’s estimated time of 2017, it is safe to say that Ice Cube will be very busy these next two years.
