Former Libyan leader of 42-years Moammar Gadhafi has been killed. Reports also claim that Gadhafi’s son, Mutassim, and his chief of intelligence, Abdullah al-Senussi, were also killed. According to MSNBC, “The ousted dictator died of wounds suffered in his capture near his hometown of Sirte, according to a senior National Transitional Council military official and a government minister.” A gun-battle took place and rebels found Gadhafi in a hiding place in the city of Sirte. Agence France-Presse has leaked a photo showing the arrest of Gadhafi, as he appears to be wounded and bloody. Citizens of Tripoli are celebrating in the streets of news of Gadhafi’s death. Gadhafi’s time in power has been called his ‘reign of terror.’ Gadhafi has started several wars during his time as leader, and there were claims he possessed weapons of mass destruction. Gadhafi was discharged from power in August and his whereabouts have not been known for months.
MSNBC reports “NATO said its aircraft fired on a convoy near Sirte earlier, but would not confirm reports that Gadhafi had been a passenger. We are checking and assessing the situation,” a NATO official said. “Clearly these are very significant developments, which will take time to confirm. If it is true, then this is truly a historic day for the people of Libya.”
Alleged reports are confirmed and Libyan citizens are happy they will no longer have to live in fear. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was quoted earlier stating, “either development would add legitimacy and relief to the formation of a new government” in Libya.
