Something cool happened at the Barclay’s Center on Wednesday night (Nov. 30) in a game featuring the New York Islanders (NYI) and Pittsburgh Penguins (PGH). The Islanders tied an NHL record for the fastest two goals scored in the league’s history.

In the dying seconds of the game, NYI’s Anders Lee broke a 3-3 tie. Then, on the ensuing faceoff with 24 seconds left, Nikolay Kulemin ripped a shot into the Pens’ empty net. The two goals came just three seconds apart.

According to NHL.com, “the two goals in three seconds tied the NHL record for fastest by one team (St. Louis Eagles, March 12, 1935; Minnesota Wild, Jan. 21, 2004)”

NYI won the game 5-3.
