Angela DePaola, is a sophomore at Bloomsburg University studying early childhood education. She was born July 15, 1993 in Westwood, New Jersey. As part of the series I Got It From My Mama, I asked Angela to tell me a little about the lessons that her Mother taught her growing up.

1. “Take pride in yourself and everything you do” – “My mom always tells me to be proud of myself and everything I accomplish no matter how small it may seem. Sometimes I can be too hard on myself, so my mom simply reminds me that if I am not proud of what I’ve done then why should anyone else be?”

2. “ Don’t sweat the small things”– “My Mom constantly reminds me of this one, because sometimes I overreact or get worked up about something so little. But I try to always remember to take a step back and actually think about the situation and most of time it is not as bad as I made it seem in my head.”

3. “Take everyday as it comes”– “I tend to always think about what happened in the past and what might happen in the future that I forget to live in the present. My Mom tells me to focus on the now instead of thinking about what already happened and what is to come. If you focus too much on the past or future you can miss out on the greatness that is right in front of you.”

4. “Look for the positive instead of seeing the negative”– “It’s so easy to get wrapped up in all the negatives that are around us that we don’t always see the positives. No matter what is going on in my life my Mom always tells me that even in the worst situations there will be some good that comes out of it.”

5. “You can’t please everyone”– “Although it is important to consider people’s feelings you can’t always do things just to make others happy. Sometimes you have to put your happiness first and do what’s best for you.”

6. “Blessings come in all different shapes and sizes” – “If I complain to my Mom that something isn’t going the way I wanted it to she always tells me ‘Well. Life’s not fair now is it?’ Then she’ll tell me to get over it and be grateful for everything in my life and all the good that is yet to come. Sometimes the reason one thing doesn’t go according to plan is because something better is going to come.”
