Huskies Wrestling Puts on a Show for Their Fans and Alumni

On Friday, Feb. 7, the Bloomsburg University wrestling team took down Virginia Military Institution at home on ‘Alumni Night.’ Freshman Christian Gannone (125 lbs.), redshirt freshman Josh Mason (133 lbs.), and sophomore Aaron Coleman (149 lbs.), all pinned their opponents. They led the Huskies to a lopsided 37-11 victory. Marlon Argueta-Diaz, Alex Cardia, Nate Newberry, and Kyle Murphy also had hard-fought wins via decision.

This match was more electrifying than the average wrestling match. The Nelson Field House gymnasium was packed full of Bloomsburg University alumni wrestlers and fans. The former Huskies came to support the current wrestlers in Friday’s match. The alumni were also recognized for the hard-work and dedication they put into the Bloomsburg University wrestling program.

Captain, redshirt senior, Trevor Allard, is 18-2 on the season. He is currently ranked 11th in the country at 184 pounds. Trevor shared his notions on the night.

“It was great having the alumni back in town for our match versus VMI. Having many of Bloomsburg’s greatest former wrestlers there to cheer us on was a really cool experience,” said Allard. “It is really special for our program to share the rich history of Bloomsburg wrestling with the current wrestlers and fans. Seeing some of the greats inspires me to hopefully etch my name in Bloomsburg wrestling history.”

The Huskies near the end of the season as all their preparation and hard work is laid on the line. The Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship and the NCAA Division I Championship are just around the corner, but their hunt is not over yet. They have three upcoming matches where they hope to build on their recent victory. They host Cleveland St. University on Feb. 14. Then they travel to George Mason University on Feb. 16. Lastly the team will take their ambitions to Old Dominion University on Feb. 23.
