Huskies win PSAC title over Slippery Rock

Bloomsburg Pa.—The 12th ranked Bloomsburg University football team scored with 27 seconds left to defeat 18th ranked Slippery Rock 42-38 on Saturday, Nov. 16. The Huskies won their first PSAC title since 1985, and did so in thrilling fashion in front of a packed house at Danny Hale Field/Redman Stadium.

Down 21-13 at half after a Slippery Rock fumble prevented a touchdown, Bloomsburg responded by outscoring the Rock 29-17 in the second half to finish their regular season 10-1.

Senior running back Franklyn Quiteh rushed 27 times for 231 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winning score with 27 seconds left. Quiteh, who appeared to lose control of the ball as he took the handoff, pinned the ball to his back before bringing it around to his hands and finishing the 10-yard run. Bothered by injuries to both of his shoulders during the game, the Harlon Hill award finalist broke a career-high run of 82 yards midway through the game.

Also chipping in on offense was redshirt sophomore quarterback Tim Kelly, who completed 13 of 28 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown. Kelly ,who also threw two interceptions in the game, shook off the bad plays to scramble for key first downs late in the game, including a 21-yard run on third and four at the Huskies’ own 36-yard line.

Redshirt freshman running back Joe Parsnik rushed eight times for 21 yards and two touchdowns in a Husky offense that ran for 360 yards as a team. Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Connor Gades caught four passes for 39 yards and a touchdown, while senior receiver Glen Hutton Jr. caught six passes for  85 yards.

On defense, redshirt junior Justin Shirk led the Huskies with 13 total tackles on the day. Redshirt sophomore Gary Postell recorded a career-high 12 total tackles, and an interception that halted a Slippery Rock drive and sealed the game with five seconds remaining. Graduate student and defensive end Larry Webster recorded a career-high 10 tackles, as well as two sacks for 17 yards.
