Greece Elections 2023
The Greek Prime Minister Kryriakos Mitsotakis visited Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou to request a dissolution of Parliament as political stability is needed for investment grades, determining the interest rates on the national debt, an important issue since the financial collapse of Greece in 2008 as a result of the Great Recession. This set the election date of all parliament positions as May 21st.
Election Background
The controlling party in Greece was New Democracy, a centre-right party with Kyriakos Mitsotakis as the leader of the party. New Democracy took power in 2019. Prime Minister Mitsotakis and his government received praise from the wider world for the response to Covid-19 as well as for making loan payments ahead of time. However, there have been numerous problems for Mitsotakis and his government.
Scandals and corruption have run rampant in the country. The Novartis corruption scandal came out, which found members of New Democracy and other rival political parties had accepted bribes of at least 4.2 Billion dollars from 2006-2015. A wiretapping scandal under the direct supervision of PM Mitsotakis. In a scandal similar to Watergate, the Greek Intelligence Services (NIS) were found to be tracking and tapping phones of rival party leaders, journalists, members of the government, and Greek residents like Artemis Seaford, a former security policy manager at Meta(Facebook). A tragic incident hangs over Mitsotakis’s government. Earlier this year, a train crash occurred, causing 57 deaths and 85 injuries. The head-on collision was caused by human error and the lack of an automatic train control system. A new employee was left to run the train by himself. This came after years of complaints from train drivers in the country. The blame placed on the government comes from the actions of the government. The Greek Government had failed to modernize the rail system. Earlier, the government had made it illegal for train drivers to take action (strike/slowdown) in the name of safety.
Elections 2023
New Democracy failed to maintain a majority, losing 12 seats, coming out at 146 seats, 5 seats short of a majority. However, the biggest loser was the Syriza, one of the numerous left-wing parties in Greece, which lost 15 seats, losing 11 percent of the vote from the last parliament session, leaving them with 71 seats.
The biggest winners were PASOK-KINAL, the centre-left party, which picked up 19 seats, raising their total to 41 seats, and the Communist Party of Greece, which gained 11 seats, raising their total to 26 seats in parliament. Another small winner was Greek Solution, the right-to-far-right ultranationalist party, which won 6 more seats, upping their total to 16.
There is likely to be another round of elections shortly. As New Democracy failed to gather enough seats to form a government with just their party and they are unlikely to form a coalition government with any of the other parties. Mitsoakis declared victory, calling for a snap election to attempt to get New Democracy over the line and gain a majority.
