Granny Chic?

One of the latest trends to arise has been to prematurely dye your hair gray. Recently, it has become an almost normal sight to see young women with gray hair, and the majority of them purposely chose to have it that color.
It is not a big surprise anymore to see someone walking around with bright colored hair, ombréd hair, or random strands of color, so why not go gray? When you are young, it’s fun to experiment with your hair because, before you know it, you’ll be getting older and it won’t seem as appropriate to do so. Kelly Osbourne, who was one of the first of many celebrities we have witnessed go prematurely gray, commented on this topic back in 2012 when she first went gray:
“To me, I’m 27, I’ve got three years left, the way I look at it, to have fun with it, because once you’re 30, you look like a right idiot walking around with like rainbow, bright color hair and all different things like that. (Daily Mail).
Osbourne has the right idea here. Embrace the craziness, have fun, and experiment with your appearance while you can.
But, the bigger question of this trend isn’t about the desire to do something different, it is simply why choose gray? In my theory, it’s because people always want what they can’t have. It’s similar to the problem of girls with curly hair wanting straight hair and girls with straight hair wanting curly hair. As girls, we are rarely satisfied with what we have and how we look. We’re always looking to change something.
If that wasn’t the case, we all would all always be sporting the natural look. That means wearing no makeup and not styling our hair at all, which we know only happens on days where we’re super lazy and most likely not planning on making contact with any other human being. It’s a natural desire for us to want to make ourselves up and change our appearance. It is fun to do so, and, a lot of the time, it makes us feel more confident.
So, if you feel like changing it up and you have the desire to go prematurely gray, I say why not? This granny chic style is starting to bloom, so if you don’t feel like waiting until you’re older to have gray hair, go ahead and dye it now. With the right shade of gray for your skin tone and the right styling, this grandmother look can really work for young women as well.
