January 31st Special Election
A special election was called after State Senator John Gordner, from the 27th district, resigned from his position on November 30th. Democrat Patricia Lawton faces Republican Lynda Schlegel Culver to replace Senator Gordner.
Patricia Lawton is a Bloomsburg University Alumni. Graduating with a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, before completing her Master’s Degree here as well in Speech-Language Pathology/Pathologist. Lawton when on to be a Speech-Language Pathologist for numerous organizations, including Bloomsburg University, as an Assistant Professor. Before moving on to Penn State as an instructor at its Harrisburg Campus.
Lawton’s campaign focuses on people over party. “What we need is for “party politics” to stop and to work together to build a brighter future for our communities.” Lawton’s primary focus is improving infrastructure, mental health resources, reproductive rights for women, and education. Lawton also promised to support term limits for members of Congress. Lawton has been endorsed by Action Together NEPA.
Lynda Schlegel Culver is also a Bloomsburg University Alumni. She graduated with a degree in Political Science in 1991. She worked in State Representative Merle Phillips’ office as the District Manager. She became a State Representative in 2011, replacing her retiring boss.
Culver’s campaign focuses on improving the economy and investing in infrastructure and people.“We need to focus on growing the paychecks of Pennsylvanians and bringing down the cost of basic necessities rather than increasing the size and reach of government or the influence of special interests.” Culver has received endorsements from the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry and U.S. Representative Dan Meuser (R-9).
