Within the last year or so, exercising and fitness has been trending. Many people are purchasing gym memberships to lose weight, stay fit, and build muscle.
What’s the sudden rush on getting “gains”?
During the recent coronavirus pandemic, many citizens were stuck in their homes. All day, people sat around with not much to do. The immense lack of movement took a toll on many as they plan to regain their pre-pandemic strength.
Many gained weight and lacked ways to stay in shape as more gyms closed over time. Negative opinions rose when mask mandates were set out and gym goers felt constricted breathing while working out. Click here for an NYT article on a rise in gym activity post pandemic.
Now, a few years since the beginning of the pandemic, people are free to breathe and get their sweat on.
Here are the latest exercise trends of 2023 from Elle.
Since January 2023, gyms have been growing with new memberships. Why? January is the month of New Year’s resolutions and one of the most common is to exercise more. Is this trend continuing through the summer months?
Gabriella Naples, frequent gym goer and employee of various Planet Fitness locations, shares “I have seen an increase in memberships coming into the summer months due to the pressure of having that “dream body”.
She also noted, “The increasing heat in the summer is sending people to gyms because working out outside has become too unbearable.”
Jenna Cortez, frequent gym goer and employee of Planet Fitness, shares her favorite time of the year to attend the gym is in the fall because she enjoys “getting into a routine to help prepare to bulk in the winter.”
There are many methods to go about fitness such as personal training, group fitness, weight training, and more. The pandemic introduced a new form of exercise within a virtual workout form.
A user can join an online call with either their trainer or with a class, then they perform the workout in the privacy of their home. This method sure is convenient, but definitely not for everyone [especially those who thrive in-person].
Various brands have influenced the workout realm as well pushing people to be active and wear their gear. Gymshark, YoungLA, DarcSport, and many other notable brands make a daily influence on social media.
TikTok, Instagram, and other social media platforms share a great number of so-called fitness gurus and “experts” posting about their own personal workouts. While sharing these posts, these influencers are also representing brands [like the ones mentioned above] as their “ambassadors”.
When working out during the summer, it’s important to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Make sure to stay hydrated, wear breathable clothing, and avoid exercising during peak sun hours. Listen to your body and take breaks as needed to prevent overheating.
