BU Hosts Relay for Life
BU students had a ton of fun while raising money for a great cause
Cancer. The sheer mention of the word can bring a deafening hush over the largest crowd. No doubt, there is nothing funny about the disease. However, people still manage to have fun while raising money to find a cure.
Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania hosted the annual Relay for Life this past Friday, March 25 to Saturday, March 26 in the basketball courts in the Student Recreation Center.
Total, the event had 500 applicants and raised $25,314. Just $685 short of their goal of $26, 000.
“It’s a great cause,” said BU student, Emily Daniels. “All of the members of our team [Purple Pride] had family members affected by cancer, so this really hits home.”
The event opened with a survivor’s ceremony where the cancer survivors in attendance took a lap around the track.
“That was so emotional,” said BU student, Mariah Mott. “It was just incredible to see all of these people who fought so hard and won.”
The theme of the event was “Relay Around the World,” an idea hatched from the mind of chair person for BU’s chapter of Colleges Against Cancer, Carly Hustedt.
“We have stands set up around the track selling different things,” said Hustedt. “Each stand is representing a different country.”
Many activities, games, and live performances were planned for the attendants such as a dodgeball tournament, specialty laps and a Miss Relay contest.
“The Miss Relay contest is my favorite event planned tonight,” said Hustedt. “We have the guys dress up in drag and everyone votes on their favorite one.”
Overall, a great deal of fun seemed to be had by all.
“I’m having a blast,” said BU student, Devon Perkins. “My cousin died of cancer five years ago, so I really enjoy that we can have fun while raising money for the cure.”
