Equal Pay Day
You wouldn’t expect in 2014 that women still aren’t making as much as men in the workforce, even when they are doing the same job as a man or if their performing in a higher position. It all started when John F. Kennedy signed The Equal Pay Act of 1963, this law stated men and women should be paid equally for the work they do at the same establishment.
President Barack Obama has been a huge supporter for equal pay for women saying “Women with college degrees may earn hundreds of thousands of dollars less over the course of her career than a man at the same educational level, and that’s wrong. This isn’t 1958 it’s 2014.” Obama has made this topic very personal because he was raised by a single mother and also because he wants fairness for his wife and two daughters.
This year The Equal Pay Day is on April 8 and this day signifies women’s wages catching up to what men were paid in 2013. The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap said that women are paid 90 percent of what men are paid until they hit the age of 35 where it decreases to 75 to 80 percent. After all these years, the pay gap still hasn’t closed. Why?
The Huffington Post says several aspects come into play, like how women are under represented in higher paying positions. You may be thinking this seems ludicrous but not that long ago in January, Congress made history for having 98 women total represented in the Senate and the House. Hilary Clinton is thinking about running for president in 2016 and women outnumber men in college.
If all these advances in the world are happening for women I believe the gap should be closed for good not this slow process of trying to “catch up.” Women shouldn’t have to try to beat men we should be working together and this means having equal pay for everyone.
