Popular Broadway hit Wicked, could possibly be hitting the big screen by next year. Marc Platt, who produced Into the Woods, told CNN that the film would come out in 2016, but it is not set in stone. The play was based off of the book Wicked, and now the film will be based off of the play. Platt wants the fans of Wicked to be patient because it took him 27 years to make Into the Woods into a film from its original production. When asked by Film Divider about the uncertainty of reaching the goal of the 2016 release, Platt said, “It’s a loose goal. But the bar is very high for the creators of Wicked. Our show is still so strong everywhere, and we just set a record in both London and Edinburgh last week, and in Los Angeles, and we did on Broadway. Audiences enjoy that show so much that we are intending to move forward on the movie but aren’t going to do so until we’re satisfied in the material we have as a screenplay, and that the film will be every bit as satisfying as what we have on the stage.”
The film is currently in progress with writer, Winnie Holzman. Once in production, the director will be Stephen Daldry.
Will the movie live up to the play’s standards? Guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
