Susan Boyle, a 47-year-old unemployed Scottish church singer had her moment in the spotlight. In an episode of Britain’s Got Talent, (Britain’s version of American Idol) Boyle stunned the world with her rendition of I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables, bringing judges Amanda Holden, Piers Morgan and the cold-hearted Simon Cowell to their feet.
Boyle, who suffers from a learning disability, is from Blackburn Scotland and lives alone with her 10-year-old cat, Pebbles. She took time off from choir singing to take care of her ailing mother who died in 2007 at the age of 91. Her performance marked the first time singing since her mother’s death.
Due to her physical appearance and disability, Boyle was teased relentlessly by her classmates in school. Even prior to her performance, she was looked down upon by the judges and audience members for her physical appearance and age. However Boyle quickly won over their hearts within the first two notes of the song as the audience rose out of their seats giving her a standing ovation.
“With out a doubt, that was the biggest surprise I have had in three years of doing this show” exclaimed Morgan. Boyle has aspirations of being like Elaine Page which quickly stunned Morgan. “When you stood up there with that cheeky grin and said I want to be like Elaine Page, everybody was laughing at you, nobody is laughing now. That was stunning and an incredible performance.”
Amanda Holden was driven to tears by Boyle and even went out on a limb saying that “I’m so thrilled because I believe that everybody here was against you, I honestly think that we all were being cynical and I think that’s the biggest wake up call ever. I just want to say it was a complete privilege listening to that,” Holden elaborated.
“I knew the minute you walked out onto that stage, that we were going to hear something extraordinary and I was right,” Cowell proclaimed. The humbled Boyle received three unanimous “yes” responses which drove her to tears. “I’m so emotional right now, unbelievable emotions.”
Since the performance, Boyle has received her first make over, her youtube video has received more than 19 millions hits and there are talks about her receiving a record contract. Also, if Boyle wins Britain’s Got Talent, she will receive $100,000 and have the opportunity to perform live at the Royal Variety Performance in front of the Royal Family.
Boyle is a true testament that you should never judge a book by its cover.
