Thor Thunders into the Box Office

The god of thunder shook up movie theaters all over the country this past weekend.

Marvel’s, Thor: The Dark World stars Australian actor Chris Hemsworth as the title character Thor, an alien from the planet Asgard.  Thor returns to Earth after the events of last years summer blockbuster Marvel’s The Avengers. Also returning to the Marvel Universe saga, is British actor Tom Hiddleston as Thor’s nemesis and brother, the god of mischief, Loki.

After capturing Loki and preventing the destruction of Earth, Thor must help restore the balance to The Nine Realms.  However, when his human love interest Jane Foster, played by actress Natalie Portman, accidently discovers a long lost relic and weapon from the past, Thor, with the help of Loki, must race to save Jane and the rest of the universe from an enemy they did not see coming.

Opening on Nov. 8, Thor: The Dark World raked in more then 86 million dollars in the first weekend, grossing over 300 million dollars worldwide at the time of its release. Despite the high numbers, this high action sequel received a 7.7 on the IMDb (Internet Movie Datebase) scale and a 65 percent “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes’ scale, with 86 percent of audiences giving it two thumbs up. “I thought it was good, it had a good action sequences and excellent comic relief for when things got too intense,” said Sean Eggleston, a 22-year-old comic lover.

Providing the comic relief for the movie is actress Kat Dennings, who plays Jane’s sidekick Darcy. Stellan Skarsgard also returned as Dr. Erik Selvig, and like all Marvel films, Stan Lee, the creator of many superheroes makes his trademark cameo.
