The DCEU is Finally Getting its S**t Together

The DC Extended Universe, which seeks to emulate the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s formula of creating a long running story through a variety of superhero films climaxing a series of collaborations, is finally having the resurgence fans have been hoping for.
After a series of box office successes that have been almost universally loathed by fans and critics alike, these titles being “Man of Steel,” “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and “Suicide Squad,” the DCEU has made the first of several steps in redeeming themselves in the eyes of their audience.
The first release of the DCEU since “Suicide Squad” will be Patty Jenkins’s “Wonder Woman”, starring Gal Gadot. The film will be the first in either the DCEU or MCU to have both a female director and female lead, which some consider to be a major feminist victory. Early screenings of the film, which will be released in early June, have already promised to do justice to the character, while likely being the first in a long line of, for lack of a better term, good DC works.
In addition to early praise for “Wonder Woman”, the DCEU released a long-awaited promotional trailer for “the DC universe’s team of super-powered crime-fighters (hailed mockingly by hardcore Marvel fans as the DC version of The Avengers), which proves to be an extremely satisfying, intense and action packed, but well balanced and comical, early look at the undaunted ensemble.
In the most recent and most shocking piece of DC news, The Avengers director Joss Whedon has been announced to direct a solo Batgirl film. While this is still in early pre-production, Whedon is a fan-favorite filmmaker who has proven, with both The Avengers and its sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron, that he is an innovator of the now immensely successful superhero genre, and is capable of creating a compelling and clever original story, unlike the DCEU’s recurring director Zack Snyder, who is responsible for the widely despised MoS and BVS.
While the future of the DCEU has been shaky to say the least, it’s clear that the creators behind DC are listening to the fans, and they are finally willing to deliver the content we’ve all been hoping for.
