Elastic Heart: Art or Pedophilia?
Sia’s most recent video for her new song “Elastic Heart” features some interesting performers: 12-year-old Maddie Ziegler from the show “Dance Mom’s” and 28-year-old Shia LaBeouf. Ziegler reappears in her nude leotard and blond wig from “Chandelier,” but in this video her and LaBeouf are dancing and screaming their heads off in a cage.
The controversy stemmed from them dancing around almost naked in a cage, not to mention their huge age difference. Sia took to Twitter to say, “I anticipated some ‘pedophilia!!!’ cries for this video. All I can say is Maddie and Shia are two of the only actors I felt could play” and “I apologize to those who felt triggered by #ElasticHeart My intention was to create some emotional content, not to upset anybody.”
Many speculated that the video was about Sia’s relationship with her father, but Sia explained the meaning of the music video in a behind the scenes feature on DanceOn Network as part of “The Edge” series.
The cage represents the skull and Ziegler is supposed to be one of LaBeouf’s self state, like his inner child or his demons. Instead of a romantic relationship between the two dancers, the video is about a battle inside the head.
LaBeouf said during the video, “She probably picked me because she identifies with some aspect of my personality, in that we push boundaries a bit. I think we’re in this middle ground of pop and something else.” The video pushes boundaries visually and gets viewers to really think beyond what they are seeing.
