Investigation Continues, Students Worried

The investigation into an attempted armed robbery that occurred Monday night on East 1st Street Monday night in Bloomsburg is still underway.
The incident happened around 8 p.m. near Penn and East First Streets behind the Uni-Mart convience store. The Bloomsburg Police Department was notified shortly after and Bloomsburg University students were notified through text and email notification later that night.
According to a press release from the Bloomsburg Police, “The victim was approached from behind…the suspect attempted to take the victims purse. The suspect produced a pocketknife and cut the victim on her leg.”
This incident, similar to ones that have happened in the communities past, has heightened fear in students. Especially in the university community, students are nervous to be out at night. Jennifer Stanton, a sophomore occupational therapy major says that people need to always be aware of their surroundings.
“Being a girl makes this type of event extremely scary,” Stanton said. “I am going to have to always be looking out, hoping that this never happens to me.”
In an email to students in accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Police and Crime Statistics Act of 1990 said that the victim was, “…described as being as a male of undetermined race, approximately six feet tall. He was wearing a dark hoodie and was armed with a knife.” The suspect then fled from the scene.
“Before we left our house we were freaking out, “said BU student Samantha Getman, who walked to the convenience store with a group of friends. “We heard our neighbors outside and we didn’t know it was them and got scared. We were so on edge just to walk to Uni-Mart.”
People are advised to be cautious and walk in groups when traveling outside at night. If anyone has information that could lead police to the suspect, they are urged to call the police department at (570) 784-4155 ext. 173.
