It’s that time again for the annual Trash to Treasure event. This is definitely something that you don’t want to miss. Last year’s event was great, but this year’s event will definitely be much bigger and better.

Adrienne Mael the current President and CEO of the United Way Columbia said, “Our goal this year is to wow everyone in the community with this revamp Trash to Treasure, and to also double our profits from last year.”

Trash to Treasure will be held from 8 a.m. -12 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds. In addition to the yard sell there will be food, drinks, and entertainment. The United Way wants to raise money for the community while having a great time in the process.

If you haven’t been to any of the United Way’s Trash to Treasures events in the past, you may be wondering what it is and why it’s so great. To make things simple, it’s a huge community yard sale that not only benefit’s the United Way, but everyone else in the community as well.

Unwanted items are donated to the United Way, which then are cleaned sorted and sold at the Trash to Treasures event. Although these are unwanted items, the United Way promises that you will find some great gems at a discounted price. Last year’s items consisted of computers, house furniture, kitchen appliances, printers, bedding items, clothes, and this year’s items will have that and so much more. Once all the items are sold or given away, all the money raised then gets distributed back into the community in various ways.

The United Way uses the money for studies examining problems communities are experiencing and finds ways to change it. The United Way also funds small nonprofits within the community, who then create programs and do other projects to help people within the community. The United Way makes sure that every dollar raised at Trash to Treasure is used in a way to benefit the community.

If you find that you won’t make it to this year’s Trash to Treasure event, but still want to help support a great cause, there are other ways you can help. The United Way encourages students to donate whatever they don’t want at the end of the semester. You can donate by emptying your items into containers that will be located in each residence building.

The United Way knows that students are always looking for ways to minimize the amount of items when packing, so donating will benefit both parties. Also, if you can’t donate the United Way is always looking for volunteers to help sort and price the donated items before the event actually takes place.

Not only does the United Way want students to get involved, it wants people within the community as well. They know that just like students, there are plenty of people who have items they don’t want, but can’t seem to trash them because they’re still in good condition. There will be room for potential sellers to bring tables down and set up shop or the United Way will kindly rent tables to sellers at a low cost.

The United Way hopes everyone in Bloomsburg attends this years Trash to Treasure event. This will be a great event that you won’t want to miss.
